St John’s Wart (Hypericum Perforatum) is one of our superstar rongoā for 2022 – her swathes of bright yellow putiputi heavily tasked with infusing some sunshine into our lives this year.

Hypericum is an incredibly versatile rongoā that can boost mood levels and provide relief from depression, anxiety, nervous irritability, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social phobia, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), pain relief, viral infections, tiredness, loss of appetite, menopause and trouble sleeping.

Topically Hypericum is widely used as a vulnerary for wound healing of cuts, scrapes and punctures; and to soothe and heal the perineum after birth.

Hypericum also supports a healthy inflammation response, treating tired muscles, minor bruises and strains. Current research suggests Hypericum may also counteract the pro‐inflammatory effects of various cytokines.

However extra care must be taken when using Hypericum - serious interactions with commonly used medications can occur, making some medications less effective while making others stronger. If you are on medication, it is imperative you advise your healthcare provider, so they can review your medications to see if there could be any problems.

TO TAKE HYPERICUM EXTRACT:

* Our extracts are highly concentrated alcohol and glycerine based liquid formulas that selectively extract the active ingredients of the rākau

* Add drops directly under the tongue - this gets the active ingredients directly into your bloodstream

* You can also dilute the extract in a small amount of water or juice

* It may take 3 to 6 weeks to feel any effects from Hypericum

HYPERICUM PRECAUTIONS :

* If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding or take pharmaceutical drugs, please consult your doctor prior to use

* Hypericum may interact with and/or reduce the efficacy of a number of common medicines including Antibiotics, Anti-depressants; any medicines that affect serotonin, Oral contraceptives, Immunosuppressants, Blood thinners, Sedatives, Anxiety medications, Cancer, Heart, HIV/AIDS medicines.

* Contains alcohol - not suitable for children

* Hypericum may cause adverse reactions including gastrointestinal symptoms, fever, allergic reactions, dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, nausea, loss of muscle coordination, tiredness, sweating, shaking and a dry mouth. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking Hypericum and seek immediate medical attention

HYPERICUM CONTRAINDICATIONS :

* Hypericum may worsen symptoms in people with certain conditions, including Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Bipolar Disorder (may bring on mania or increase speed of cycling), Major depression, Schizophrenia (may increase the risk of psychosis), Alzheimer's disease

* Do not take Hypericum for 2 weeks before surgery - Hypericum may increase the risk of complications if you are put under anaesthesia.

* Do not take Hypericum if you have received an organ transplant – Hypericum can interact with transplant rejection medications.
